Czech Public Opinion on the Issue of GM Crops – Food 2021
Hanzlová, Radka
In a special survey called Food 2021 the Public Opinion Research Centre at the Institute of Sociology, Czech Academy of Sciences, surveyed the Czech public for its opinions on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and crops (GM crops) used to produce the food we consume. The majority of respondents (74%) surveyed said that were familiar with the term ‘genetically modified crops’. Just under one-tenth of them (8%) said they knew what it means, one-third (35%) said they had a rough idea, and almost one-third (31%) said they had heard the term but did not know what it means. Slightly less than one-quarter (23%) of Czech citizens believe that the genetic modification of crops is morally wrong. Almost one-half (47%) of respondents said they would be willing to take medicines that contain genetically modified organisms.
Genetically modified organisms and the legal regulation of their disposal
Fornůsková, Michaela ; Žákovská, Karolina (advisor) ; Stejskal, Vojtěch (referee)
GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS AND LEGAL REGULATION OF THEIR USE ENGLISH RESUME This thesis aims to give a complete insight into the framework and problem questions arising in connection with legal regulation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The use of genetic modifications as one of modern techniques of biotechnology has spread widely during last fifty years. This technology has brought many advances. On the other hand as any new technology it represents potential adverse effects on biological diversity and possible risks to human health. At the beginning there is a brief introduction into GMOs from historical and technical point of view. Then I dealt with biosafety measures adopted at global, regional and national levels. The main principles of environmental law take part afterwards. I am focusing mainly on prevention and precautionary principle. International law relating to the GMOs consists of soft law documents. There is only one exception - Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety focusing on transboundary movement. The Law of EU comprises of Regulations, Directives and Recommendations. Notifications, approvals, risk assessment and monitoring are consequential. The Czech law has been harmonized according to the law of the European Communities. Act no. 78/2004 Coll., on the use of GMOs and genetic...
Genetically modified organisms and legal regulation of their use
Kaplán, Martin ; Žákovská, Karolina (advisor) ; Franková, Martina (referee)
The purpose of this paper is to analyse legal regulation of genetically modified organisms ("GMO"). This work consists of seven chapters and focuses especially on differences in regulations of the United States of America ("USA") and European Union ("EU"). While the USA consider GMO equal to other products and have no GMO specific legal norms, the EU regulates GMOs with directives and regulations which set GMO apart from other products. Conclusions are being drawn in last chapter. It is suggested, that the protective and economic approach to the GMOs should be ballanced out on the international law scene, so that the development of biotechnology is not slowed down too much, while safety to human health and environment is guaranteed.
Selected issues of legal regulation of genetically modified organisms
Pečený, Přemysl ; Stejskal, Vojtěch (referee)
1 Selected issues of legal regulation of genetically modified organisms Abstract Genetically modified organisms are one of the most pressing challenges of modern agriculture and other economic sectors. This is due to the large number of potential benefits and risks, which are quite often insufficiently scientifically researched, exacerbating the controversy associated with their use. It is a technology that has been used for a relatively long time, but its legal regulation is constantly challenged due to the dynamic development of the related scientific advances. Despite the aforementioned, some issues of the topic receive only marginal attention, which makes it difficult to create and apply a fully functioning legal regulation. The diploma thesis itself deals with selected issues of legal regulation of genetically modified organisms, focusing on the readiness of legal regulation, functionality of auxiliary instruments, as well as de lege ferenda considerations. These topics are formulated into three basic research questions, which the author tries to answer by analyzing relevant parts of the legal regulation. The aim of this thesis is to expand this vital part of environmental law with new findings and thus supplement other academic works that deal with legal regulation of genetically modified organisms....

Attitudes of high school students toward genetically modified organisms
Brousková, Mariana ; Janštová, Vanda (advisor) ; Čížková, Věra (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on investigating attitudes of czech high school students toward genetically modified organisms (= GMO). The main objectives of this thesis are to investigate students' attitudes toward, and knowledge of GMO, to find out any relation between attitudes toward, and knowledge of GMO. I found out if there is any relation between students' attitudes toward GMO and other factors like family environment (level and type of eduction of parents, religion), school environment (teachers who teach students, school) or place of residence. Data colletion was carried out by quantitative questionnaire survey among 185 Czech students of Prague's and out-of-town's grammar schools from 10 different classes. My findings show that the attitudes of Czech students toward GMO are positive and are not influenced by gender, parents' education, the students' attitudes toward biology, type of students' planned studies at university or the location of their school. However, at the same time, a statistically significant difference was found in the case of free-time activities, the teacher who teaches students and the purchase of organic food. In the case of the students' knowledge, a significant difference was found in the case of the type of the father's education, the type of the students' planned...
Legal regulation of the disposal of genetically modified organisms
Medveďová, Lenka ; Franková, Martina (advisor) ; Humlíčková, Petra (referee)
Legal Regulation of the Use of Genetically Modified Organisms ABSTRACT The use of genetically modified organisms on a global scale is on the rise which requires their efficient and consistent regulation. The main goal of the thesis is to provide a comprehensive overview of the legal regulation of genetically modified organisms and their use on several levels. After an introduction to the topic, the thesis deals with the key international documents and then moves on to examining different approaches on the topic and exploring regulation in the United States and in the European Union with a connection the legislation in Czech Republic. In addition, four annexes are included at the end of the thesis for a better illustration of the current use of genetically modified organisms in the world.
Regulation of genetically modified organisms and nanotechnology : (comparison of British, Czech and Slovak legislation in the context of EU)
Zemaník, Vladimír ; Damohorský, Milan (advisor) ; Žákovská, Karolina (referee)
Regulation of genetically modified organisms and nanotechnology (comparison of British, Czech and Slovak legislation in the context of EU) The aim of this thesis is to first compare the british, czech and slovak legislation relating to genetically modified organisms. By the analysis of their respective features, the author points out the difficult bits and tries to look for the ideal solutions to the current problems of the european GM legislation. In spite of the fact, that the european legislation in this field is highly harmonised, there are still some areas that can be regulated by the member states as well as some holes waiting to be fixed. This thesis is composed of six main chapters which correspond to six main topics of present biotechnology legislation that are in the author's opinion the most significant. First chapter deals with the basic issues of releases of genetically modified organisms into the environment, on market, and with their contained use. Secondly, the author dissects the GM labelling and traceability legislation and shows the various thresholds of GM presence that are applicable to different areas. Third chapter then analyses the rules on co-existence between GM plants on one hand and conventional and organic plants on the other. Nextly, the unilateral acts of member...
